Greece Bombings not a part of International Terrorism

Greece has denied that the parcel bombs are related to international terrorism. Giorgos Petalotis, a government spokesman said that “(The parcel bombs) are not related to international terrorism and groups like al Qaeda.”

All air shipments of packages and mails have been suspended for the next 48 hours. This public order was issued soon after the discovery that the packets originated from the capital.

Police discovered packages addressed to Silvio Berlusconi (Prime Minister) and Angela Merkel (Chancellor). They were destroyed by the authorities and never reached their destination. Authorities have said that their primary investigations show that the packets originated from Athens, Greece.

On Tuesday, two more parcels with explosives were found in the cargo section of Athens airport. They were destined for Europol, the European Union law enforcement agency and the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. These bombs too were detonated safely.

Recently there has been a series of mail bombing attempts on different embassies in Athens. Most of the mails were successfully detected and destroyed in time by the police. There has been only two cases where the explosives were partially successful. A courier employee was wounded when a package exploded. It was destined to reach the Mexican Embassy. Swiss Embassy saw an explosion in its courtyard when an explosive device was thrown at the embassy.

Security has been tightened in all the embassies and also in all important locations. Police are investigating this issue; they have so far made two arrests. They were charged with terrorism charges. Those arrested are Greek citizens. Police suspects this is the mastermind of leftist militant, Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, but they haven’t made any official announcement about this. One of the arrested men is allegedly a member of this militant group.

Police claims they have closed in and it won’t be long before they will arrest the master minds. They said they are currently looking for five young men, in their early 20s. They are members of this group.
